Hawthorns
A new warm and nurturing nursery for 80 children in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The interiors of this nursery and preschool are designed to foster imagination, comfort, and a lasting connection to the natural world — creating a calm, joyful environment where children can play, learn, and grow.

‍

Rooted in storytelling and sensory experience, the concept draws inspiration from Where the Wild Things Are, with a palette of soft sandy neutrals, gentle greens, and deep inky blues. These tones evoke nature’s quiet drama — playful yet grounding — sparking curiosity while offering warmth and reassurance.

‍

Natural light shapes the interiors, ensuring each room feels open and alive. Smooth tactile surfaces, warm timber joinery, and muted textiles enhance comfort and soften acoustics. Every element has been considered through the lens of early years development: intuitive layouts support independence, integrated storage maintains calm, and robust, natural materials invite touch.

‍

Large sliding doors connect interior and garden, encouraging freedom and exploration. The result is a nurturing, nature-led space where thoughtful design supports discovery, creativity, and wellbeing.
