This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and careful planning can completely transform a building’s future. Using Class Q Permitted Development Rights, a simple agricultural barn has been reimagined as a bright, spacious family home set within the Kent countryside.
Our clients sought a local architect familiar with rural character and planning constraints. Together, we turned the barn’s raw concrete structure into a warm, welcoming home while retaining its agricultural spirit. Timber cladding now wraps the exterior, adding natural warmth, while a sleek zinc roof nods to the building’s working past. Large windows bring light into every room and frame sweeping views across the fields, blurring the line between indoors and landscape.
Inside, the barn’s original form remains legible. A double-height entrance hall and gallery echo traditional barn proportions, while the three original bays have been adapted into intimate, functional family spaces. A polished concrete floor anchors the interior, subtly referencing its agricultural history while supporting modern family life.
The result is a home that celebrates both heritage and contemporary design — bright, practical, and deeply connected to the surrounding countryside.
