Commissioned by Maidstone Borough Council, this project set out to revitalise the town centre bus station — a heavily used public space in need of attention. The aim was to create a safer, brighter, and more welcoming environment for the thousands of commuters who pass through each day.
The design focused on improving daily usability while reshaping the overall atmosphere of the station. Outdated glass brick walls that had made the space feel enclosed were removed, opening up sightlines and allowing passengers to see buses approaching. This simple intervention enhanced safety, orientation, and the flow of movement throughout the concourses.
Colour and lighting played a key role in the transformation. A bold, playful palette guides visitors intuitively through the station, while strategic lighting upgrades create a lighter, cleaner, and more inviting environment from morning through evening.
This project demonstrates how small-scale, thoughtful interventions can dramatically improve public spaces. Recognised with a nomination for the Architects Journal Retrofit Awards in 2023, Maidstone Bus Station now serves its community better — practical, cheerful, and ready for the future.
