We were thrilled to win a competitive pitch to design a new nursery and preschool within the beautiful grounds of Hawthorns School. Set in the Green Belt, a conservation area, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the site demanded a sensitive and carefully considered design that respected its history and surroundings.
Our goal was to create a warm, welcoming environment where children could play, learn, and feel connected to nature. Drawing inspiration from the neighbouring Grade II* listed school, particularly its distinctive gable, the building blends familiar architectural cues with a contemporary approach. Large sliding glass doors connect the interior and garden, fostering exploration, while abundant natural light ensures bright, airy spaces that nurture curiosity and calm.
The interiors are inspired by Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, using sandy neutrals, soft greens, and deep inky blues to create a playful yet soothing palette. Sustainability was integral, with air source heat pumps, natural ventilation, and high-performance insulation.
The result is a sensitive, imaginative space where heritage, nature, and early years education harmoniously meet.
