The store is wrapped in perforated Corten steel, with a pattern of circular openings that allows natural light to filter through the façade while also providing passive ventilation throughout the bike store. As the light changes during the day, the perforations create shifting patterns of light and shadow across the interior.
Corten was chosen to respond to the surrounding palette of red brick and red-toned cladding. Sitting alongside the university allotments, it felt particularly appropriate; a material that naturally weathers, develops and changes over time alongside its landscape.
Internally, a circular rooflight echoes the round perforations of the Corten façade, drawing natural light deep into the space and creating a surprisingly dramatic experience on entering. Above, a green roof further connects the building to its planted surroundings, softening its presence and adding another living, changing layer to the architecture.
