YMCA Inclusive Sports Facility

  • Project Type: Public
  • Client: YMCA East Surrey
  • Status: Completed
  • Location: Redhill, Surrey

This retrofit project has transformed the existing YMCA East Surrey facility to create a Centre of Excellence for disability sport, health and wellbeing.

We were approached by the YMCA in 2013 to investigate the feasibility of a new inclusive sports facility for their Redhill site located within the Metropolitan Green Belt. The project involved both significant refurbishment works of the existing 1990s YMCA building and a large extension to provide a new sports hall on the site of an existing external football pitch. A large area of the existing building was retrofitted to create a connection across two levels to the new hall with a flexible-use viewing gallery and activity room and a suite of accessible changing and consultation facilities.

Collaborative design

Working closely with the client and stakeholders, we developed an ambitious brief to provide an exemplar facility to showcase Paralympic sports and further the YMCA’s main focus to provide support and inspiration to those who are vulnerable, have a disability or face disadvantage within the local community.

The building was designed to be inherently sustainable; a strategy of natural ventilation with low level vents and high level automatic opening windows controls temperature, humidity and air quality to maintain a safe, healthy and comfortable internal environment.

Large areas of glazing fill the space with natural light, reducing dependence on artificial light sources during the day. Deep roof overhangs and solar control glass reduce solar heat gain, eliminating the need for artificial cooling in the main hall.

Designing for durability

We selected a simple palette of attractive, low maintenance materials internally and externally. A key feature of this palette is the use of glulam for the structural elements; the warm, natural appearance brings a special character to the space, the benefit of which can be measured by the joy and satisfaction of those who use the building.
