This gabled extension to a 1950s house has doubled the existing footprint to provide new bedrooms and a generous open plan kitchen and dining space with large sliding doors onto the garden.

The client’s brief was to create a large extension which would connect the main living space with the garden. Minimal framed sliding doors form a large continuous, openable, glazed wall.

Natural light

Large areas of glazing bring daylight into the generous new spaces and maximise the connection between the house and garden. Solar shading is used to reduce solar heat gain and ensure the spaces are comfortable throughout the year.

The extension has a calm palette of materials both internally and externally. A grey brick band at ground floor is crisply detailed with an aluminium coping and matching aluminium brise soleil and framed glazing. A rendered upper gable ties the extension visually to the existing house. This careful selection of materials ensures the design is detailed in a calm, crisp, and well-considered manner.
